How to Fuel Your Ooni Oven? | Hardwood Pellets & Charcoal

If you are considering adding an Ooni Pizza Oven to your arsenal, you might be wondering how to fuel these magic carb boxes. There are a few different ways to get the ovens scorching hot to create a beautiful char. These blackened spots are a true trademark of Neapolitan brick-oven pizza and we need a temperature of around 500°C to achieve this. Not all Ooni's are fuelled the same way, so let's dive into what each oven needs to perform at its peak.

Hardwood Pellets

The innovative gravity-fed pellet hopper in the Oony Fyra 12 automatically feeds through hardwood pellets for effortless cooking. Pellets light up easily, burn cleanly and leave little ash behind. A 3kg bag of pellets is pretty compact and will last for a good 2-3 hours of cooking. As long as you keep the pellets topped up, your oven will stay at a consistent high temperature. On top of all that they add a smoky, aromatic woody flavour to food. View our variety of premium hardwood pellets here.

Charcoal & Wood

Cooking with wood and charcoal gives food a wood-fired flavour that can't be replicated. Lump charcoal offers a wide range of temperatures and is an easy choice for low and slow cooking in an Ooni oven. Using charcoal for non- pizza dishes is a great option too. Using a combination of wood and charcoal will give you the best results in your Ooni Karu 12 or 16. Always use lumpwood charcoal and kiln-dried hardwoods (such as beech, birch, oak, hickory, mesquite, apple, or cherry). View our selection of charcoal and wood chunks here.

Ooni Digital Infrared Thermometer

Want to check if it's time for your pizza to slide in? The new and improved Ooni Infrared Thermometer will help you time this perfectly. This laser-guided, high-precision tool is calibrated to read extreme temperatures on Ooni’s cordierite baking stones, so you get the perfect bake every time.

It's calibrated automatically for use with cordierite Ooni pizza stones, but the thermometer’s emissivity settings can be adjusted by the user to more accurately measure temperatures of different materials and finishes, including steel and cast iron.
